Week 16: AvocadoAverage size: 4.6 in, 3.5 oz
At 4.6 inches long (head to bottom) and 3.5 ounces, our babies are about the size of an avocado (YUM!). In the next three weeks, they will go through a tremendous growth spurt, though, doubling their weight and adding inches to their length. Their lower limbs are much more developed now. The head is more erect than it has been, and their eyes have moved toward the front of their head. Their ears are close to their final position, too. Tiny bones forming in their ears mean the little ones can now pick up your voice. Some of their more advanced body systems are working, including the circulatory system and urinary tract. Their heart is now pumping about 25 quarts of blood each day, circulating their total blood volume through the body many times. (By the end of pregnancy, this will increase to about 190 quarts.) Eyebrows, lashes and hair are starting to fill in, and taste buds are forming. Although closed, their eyes are moving (slowly), and they've even started growing toenails.
Well things are still going great!! I do feel like time is starting to go faster now....16 weeks seems like a big number (even though it's really not)! We can't wait for our apt. next week, really hoping these babies cooperate, we are dying to know what they are :o)
